Step 7. Making the database. Creating Fields. Value List

Why a list?

We should always use computer features to decrease the amount of redundant keyboarding that is necessary. Additionally, typos can result in records not sorting correctly or being excluded from Finds and Reports.

By harnessing the Value List field you give the entry person a break and improve accuracy.

To resume adding fields:

1. Go : Layout .. Define Fields

2. Enter Category in the Field Name.

3. Change the Field type to Value List. Click Create.

4. Click Options

Value List options window

5. Click on Item 1 in the Items for Control box.

6. Enter Biology in the Item Label box.

7. Click Modify.

8. Item 1 should change to Biology.

9. Enter Chemistry in the Item Label box.

10. Click Create.

Continue the process adding all the categories
for the science fair .

11. Click OK.

12.Save your database. File .. save or command key symbol .. s

Data Verification Settings.

Click the box for "Cannot Be Blank". The entry person will be prompted to enter a choice. No skipping!

Click on the ? icon to explore the options and settings if you are interested.

When the person entering data tabs into this field the list will open. They can drag down to make their selection

I like the alternative: I type the first letter "p" and it selects Physics. A " c" would select chemisty and so on.
