Early Fall Log Mystery

It was a cool day in early autumn. I was enjoying the crisp smell of the leaves as they crunched under my feet.
I was working with my family cutting, splitting and stacking firewood. As I worked, I noticed some interestingly different logs. Most had a center that was a different color than the outside.

They looked like this one.

But then I saw this currious log.
